Mahabaleshwar is one of the "hill stations" the British built in India. Originally intended as places for ill or injured to recover, over time the hill stations become more like resorts. Mahabaleshwar is still a popular tourist destination.

Mapro Garden, in turn, is a much more recent tourist attraction at Mahabaleshwar, provided by Mapro Foods, who will happily sell you ice cream and drinks after you admire their lake.
